Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands and part of Spain although it is just off the North Africa coast. The island is the second largest in the chain after Tenerife and is known for its beaches and stunning landscape – it is an UNESCO biosphere reserve.
The capital of the island is Puerto del Rosario. It is known for having the longest white sands beaches in the whole of the Canary Islands and this makes it a popular place with tourists. It is also great for water sports fans with everything from snorkelling to surfing taking place in the seas around the island.
Fuerteventura is on the same latitude as Florida and Mexico and the temperature is rarely lower than 18 degrees or above 32 degrees. As well as over 150 beaches, the island has a lot of volcanic features from historic volcanic activity that makes for a varied and interesting landscape.
Of the many beaches, Corralejo and El Jable in the north are popular, both made up from fine sand dunes with long beaches and bays that are great for surfing and swimming. As the island receives Trade Winds, there’s always plenty of surf for people to enjoy. Windsurfing is common around Corralejo and Playas de Sotavento while wave sailing is enjoyed in the northern half of the island. Snorkelling is also popular in the northern half.
