If you are renting a car while staying in Fuerteventura, then you are in the best position to explore the island and see things that you can’t reach easily from public transport. The island has mostly great condition roads with the FV-1 and FV-2 being the two main roads. Always stick to public paved roads as cars aren’t insured to drive on unpaved roads.
One of the best drives on the island is the Northern Route from Corralejo to El Cotillo and La Oliva. This is a very scenic route that lets you stop as often as you want to check out the different beaches. Stop at Corralejo for some lunch before heading to El Cotillo then on to La Oliva, known for its church, the Church of Our Lady of La Candelaria.
Another great route is to drive through Betancuria Rural Park. This is an inland area and is a driving fan’s road with lots of twists and turns to it. Just take it steady and the route is a fun one to drive. You can also incorporate visiting Ajuy with its caves and head back on an alternative route along the FV-20 through Antigua.
The Southern Route is the third of the favourite drives around the island and is perfect for a spot of beach hopping. The route includes Costa Calma where you can stop at Sotavento Beach as well as the beaches of Jandia and Morro Jable. The latter is the southernmost resort town on the island and is a great place to stop for a meal.
